It is tempting to treat cybersecurity as a purchase. In practice, the organisations that cope best with threats are those with dull, consistent habits: an accurate inventory of assets, timely updates, and someone watching the logs.
Assess, monitor, repeat
Vulnerability assessments show where the doors are open. Continuous monitoring shows who is trying them. Neither is useful alone, and neither is ever finished.
For public institutions in particular, security is also about trust: citizens moving to digital services need confidence that their information is handled with care.
